Internet filters for schools

This article discusses the frustration of teachers who are trying to use Web 2.0 technologies with students while dealing with Internet filters. Recently, I had an administrator from a school district call me for help with our learning management system as he was enrolled in a course.  He wasn’t able to access the site to log in.  I offered to email him the URL.  He accepted but never got the email.  He later remembered that I would have to be on a safe email list before he could get my email.  In the end, he decided to go home to access our system because it was clear that his district’s email and web access were locked down so tight that they weren’t usable.

As a parent, I understand the need for some filtering but at a certain point only the kids who know how to get around the filters are able to use the technology in schools. Hmm…
